Jeff’s legal background, business background, and creativity in deal making will ensure you make the very most out of your basketball career. With the Mad Ants, he negotiated hundreds of contracts, including one of the first jersey sponsorship deals and large deals with national sponsors like State Farm and the U.S. Army. Jeff also negotiated major reforms for the NBA D-League on behalf of the D-League owners, including fundamentally changing the league’s economic structure and the league’s basketball operations, as well as negotiating profit-sharing between the teams and the NBA. These changes were a boon for all teams and led to unprecedented growth in the D-League. Finally, Jeff negotiated and structured the landmark sale of the Mad Ants to the Indiana Pacers.
While playing overseas and as owner of the Mad Ants, Jeff has seen countless players retire with little to show for their efforts due to poor economic decisions and poor financial planning. Through Jeff’s corporate contacts, he will connect you with only the best and most reputable financial institutions to make sure you walk away from the game with financial security and freedom to make the life decisions you want after your career is over.
Jeff has been selling professional basketball to corporate sponsors for over a decade and knows how to land sponsorship deals at both a local and national level in order to maximize your worth.
Jeff will help you become active in your community in a way that ensures you are maximizing your earning potential while playing and also opens doors for you during your post-career life. Helping others ingratiates players to a community like nothing else, and Jeff will find the right opportunities to accomplish this.
Potter Sports Group’s legal team is led by Jeff’s wife, Julie Potter. Julie graduated first in her class at Harvard Law School and then went on to a successful career as a litigator for Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago. She left the firm to help Jeff start the Mad Ants, where she served as the team’s general counsel. Indeed, the access you will have to this level of legal expertise in an agency is unprecedented.
JP was always willing to do whatever he could to help his players. He wanted to create a family, and he did that by establishing relationships with us and having an open door policy with everything. He also played professionally, so he understood everything we were going through, which made for great advice in every situation. We’ve always had excellent communication, and I trust him wholeheartedly. There was never a question of whether or not we were in good hands, and I credit him for more than I can fit here in a testimonial. That’s why guys always kept coming back to play for the team. Because he gave us a feeling of home. I’m excited for anyone who has the opportunity to work with JP because as long as they’re willing to put in the work, they’ll have great success!
